Depay must be consistent to match Ronaldo & Messi - Van der Gouw

The Netherlands international joined the club in a £22.3 million deal from PSV Eindhoven and the former goalkeeper insists he must maintain high performance levels
Memphis Depay must be consistent every week if he is to match the extraordinary feats of Cristiano Ronaldoand Lionel Messi at Manchester United, according to Raimond van der Gouw.

The Netherlands international completed a £22.3 million to Old Trafford in the summer but has struggled to make a continued impression thus far, as he has sparkled in the Champions League but flattered to deceive domestically.

Louis van Gaal revealed his dissatisfaction with Memphis’ performances on Monday, though he backed the summer signing to improve, and Van der Gouw has echoed his countryman's sentiments.

The former goalkeeper, who spent six years at United, believes Memphis is a “very good player” but says that the 21-year-old must learn to cope with the pressure that comes with playing for the club.

Speaking exclusively to Goal, he said: "It all looks good. The pressure to have success is high. Just look at Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Those two deliver every week on the highest level. Depay started well and the expectations are high, but that's a good thing."

Following his move from PSV, Memphis has played in seven games in all competitions and Van der Gouw has urged the youngster to remain humble, while he has also called on Van Gaal to ensure that the forward does not suffer burnout.

“He's able to bring something extra and that's what you need when you're a top player. But he must be aware he doesn't get ahead of himself,” he added.

"A season lasts a long time and he must be careful not to burn up too quickly. But Van Gaal knows all about that.

“Memphis is so strong and eager, that's great to see. He makes me think of Ruud van Nistelrooy, he was also that eager.”
