INEC To Conduct 78 Rerun Elections Across The Country

The Independent National Electoral Commission has revealed the number of rerun elections to be conducted in 2016.

The commission in a bulletin issued in Abuja on Thursday, January 7, and shared on its Facebook page, disclosed that it has 78 re-run elections to conduct in 2016.
The electoral umpire gave the breakdown of the elections which are expected to be held across the country after the Court of Appeal judgments.
“Most of the court verdicts were given in December 2015, while a few others were ordered in November 2015, and are expected to hold within 90 days or 60 days as ordered by the appellate court.
“A breakdown of the elections indicates that the commission will conduct 10 senatorial elections, 12 state constituency elections and 37 state assembly elections.
“Others are 17 federal constituency elections and 2 governorship re-run elections, subject to the verdict of the Supreme Court,” the bulletin said.
The bulletin showed that 38 governorship elections will be conducted in Rivers state, while in Abia state eight elections, all on state constituency, would be conducted as well.
The details further disclosed that one rerun election will be conducted in Adamawa state, while seven, including governorship elections, will be held in Akwa-Ibom state. It was also revealed that one election each would be conducted in Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Benue states, as well as two in Gombe state.
The commission concluded by further revealing that four elections would be conducted in Imo, six in Kogi, and three each in Plateau and Taraba states.

Several candidates including governors and senators were dismissed from their offices for electoral irregularities during the conduct of the elections that ushered them into power. Most of the oustings were in accordance with the electoral laws of the country as delivered by a competent court of law.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the December 5 and 6, governorship election that was conducted in Bayelsa state inconclusive in response to reported irregularities and violence recorded in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state, but the commission fixed January 9 for the concluding part of the exercise.
