Wasiu Alabi Pasuma |
He is fighting to retain slipping hold on street music scene.
The lyrics of the much loved fuji musician was until recently street anthems, especially amongst mob of transporters and litany of motor parks, especially in the southwest.
But the emerging players knowns as ''Local Rappers'' are speeding prising his hold on the scene.
Local Rappers is the loose term used to qualify the likes of massively popular rappers Olamide, Phyno, Reminisce, LIl Kesh and Patoranking.
The qualifier ''Local'' comes from their extreme used of vernaculars and street slangs in their deliveries.
And their acceptance and popularity is huge on the street and beyond.
Their massive acceptance has astronomically dwarfed the ratings of traditional musical lords of the streets in the mould of Fuji artiste such as Pasuma.
Backed with the clout and influence of his manager, Afolabi Oyekoya also known as ''Afo City'' (a nickname derived from working with in your face celebrity magazine City People) Pasuma is waging a battle to remain relevant.
Pasuma has embarked on a barrage collaboration efforts with the reigning musicians to ride on the waves of the trend.
''His team have also kick started intense promotions of these songs here and there to enhance popularity'' a source divulged.
And the effort is said to be paying off.
''Some of the songs have started picking up regarding airplays on radio and play time at notable clubs and leisure points'' a keen follower of events disclosed to societynowng.com
Findings revealed some of the collaboration efforts as ''Action'' featuring Olamide, ''Am On Fire'' featuring Phyno, ''Our Lagos'' featuring Patoranking.
And for wider acceptance Pasuma and his crew extended the collaboration efforts to non rappers with equally strong followers on and off the streets.
Some of the works geared towards strengthening the musician's appeal here and there are ''Ife'' featuring Tiwa Savage, ''Labe Igi'' featuring Oritsafemi and ''Olohun Oje'' featuring Qdot and others.
To further consolidate the move Pasuma and his team have realised a new album made up of a compilation of these collaboration efforts and solo put together by the artiste also known as Oganla.
The album currently being promoted is labelled ''My World''.
Findings by societynowng.com however have it that the move by Pasuma is attracting diverse reaction.
While some hailed it as a realistic approach to sustain his career and boost brand of music, fuji in the face od dwindling acceptance - Others deride it.
The opposition to Pasuma's romance with the emerging take over players is hinged on allegations of a gradual loss of the ''substance'' that makes him ''Pasuma''.
And the alleged it has started happening.
The gospellers of this allegations assert that he has started discarding the street traits that unconsciously endear him to many over time.
''Look at the video of the Action, the collaboration with Olamide...it was a reversal of role..Olamide was doing the street gait while Pasuma mellowed down and was doing butter'' an observer pointed out.
''Butter'' is the street slang for gentlemanly approach, no aggressive approach to things.
The street gait is intense gestures that shows passion and brimming energy.
Pasuma came to reckoning with soothing rough voice that resonates street appeal and completed with street gaits in his dance steps.
There was no hint of ''butter'' in his rise to becoming official street voice.
The growing argument is that with ''butter traits'' seeping into his performance as he romances the new players in bid to remain relevant, it won't be long before he losses his substance and become lost in his pursuit of relevance.
''The thing is, he is romancing younger artiste and he needs to tone down his aggressiveness and adopts a matured approach in his dealings on and off the video but ironically this forces him to water down his act and diffuses the core elements that makes him Pasuma!'' a source analysed.
''And this automatically portrays the local rappers more street than Pasuma and overtime speeds up what he is trying to avoid, becomes less popular and relevant!' another added.
But those in support of Pasuma's latest antics insist he is on the right course, that he is engaged in a battle of his life and needs leverage on all points particularly the increasing popularity of emerging players, especially ''the local rappers'' taking away is popularity.
''I guess with all this to and fro arguments we just have to wait on time to tell which side is right or not'' another observer sue for compromise in the growing debate over Pasuma's raging battle of his life to retain relevance.
