Over 15 lawyers from the Idoma speaking part of Benue State have thrown their legal weight behind embattled former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro.
Moro, a native of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State is currently facing various charges bothering on an alleged poor handling of the 2014 Nigerian Immigration recruitment exercise.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja on Wednesday, one of the lawyers, Barrister Omaga Edward Ejembi said legal practitioners from the Idoma kingdom were strongly behind Moro.
He said, “On Wednesday, over 30 lawyers stormed the Federal High, Abuja to support the immediate past Minister of Interiro, Comrade Abba Moro. Among the 30 lawyers, we have about 15 lawyers who are all from Idoma community, which is Moro’s country home.”
Reacting to the withdrawal from the case by Justice Anwuli, Omaga said it was a normal procedure.
He noted thus, “It is normal procedure that happens in a criminal matter. That is when a judge for instance, for personal reason, decides to hands off the case, it would be sent back to the Chief Justice for reassignment. That is what she has rightly done.”
Asked if Abba Moro would come out clean from the mess, the lawyers expressed hope that he would triumph at the end of the day.
“It is very obvious that he would win the case. You could recall that he was granted bail based on personal recognizance. It is very rare. It is only granted where there is no tangible evidence against the accused and the credibility of his personality that he would not escape from coming to court.
“In his own case, it shows that he has integrity and has served Nigeria diligently for years. We are not going to preempt the decision of the court but we are saying that looking at the bail condition that was given him, which was so liberal, he would surely come out.
“That is why we, Idoma lawyers, have decided to throw our weight behind him. We are all here in solidarity.”
