Sheriff’s Faction Of PDP Rejects BoT Decision On Another Convention

There is no end in sight yet for the leadership crisis of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the faction of led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has rejected the decision of the party’s Board of Trustees to hold another convention.

The Party’s Board of Trustees, after a four hour closed door meeting on Monday, passed a vote of confidence on Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee, mandating it to prepare for another convention in Abuja.

But the acting deputy chairman to Senator Sheriff, Mr Kairo Ojougboh, said the party’s Board of Trustees’ decision was wrong.

He also claimed that the board had brought more crisis to the party than work at solving the existing problems.

The Sheriff’s faction of the PDP, however, gave fresh conditions for reconciliation including that of dissolving the Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the party.

The PDP became divided after some members of the party at a national convention in Port Harcourt removed Senator Sheriff as the chairman of the party.

Before his removal, Senator Sheriff announced the postponement of the convention, a decision he said was triggered by a court order that had asked the party to put off the convention pending the hearing of a suit.

But the party BoT insisted that Senator Sheriff was no longer the chairman of the party and set up a Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Since that convention, Nigeria’s main opposition party that held power in the centre between 1999 and 2015 have remained divided over who the leader of the party is. 

While Senator Sheriff continues to parade himself as the Chairman of the PDP, Senator Makarfi-led committee has continued to plan for another national convention where the party’s executives would be elected. Source: Channels TV
