Barcelona won’t put their financial future at risk in negotiating a new contract for Lionel Messi, the club warned on Wednesday, in comments that will encourage his many suitors across Europe.
Messi and club captain Andres Iniesta are entering the final 18 months of their current deals at the Camp Nou meaning they would be free to talk to other clubs in a year’s time if they don’t extend their contracts in 2017.

Daily Mail    Gerard Pique has used Barcelona’s break from action as an opportunity to join his wife, Shakira on a trip back to her home city in Colombia.
Barcelona last played on December 21, when they beat Hercules 7-0 in the Copa del Rey, and will not return to action until January 5 when they face Atheltic Bilbao in the same competition.

Spanish government criticises Barca for supporting Messi tax fraud

Barcelona has drawn widespread criticism for its campaign to support Lionel Messi after a court found the Argentine forward and his father guilty of tax fraud.
Barcelona launched its social media campaign following last week’s court verdict that found Messi and his father guilty of defrauding the Spanish state of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million). Neither man is expected to go to jail despite being sentenced to 21 months in prison because courts in Spain often suspend sentences under two years for first-time offenders.
